Preparing for the Latvian state language test

The state language proficiency test is an exam in Latvian as a foreign language for adults. People take it for a residence permit, for work or for themselves. Here is a short guide to the levels and how to prepare.

Levels

There are three levels: A (basic), B (intermediate) and C (advanced), each with two grades, from A1 to C2.

Who needs which level

  • A2: for a permanent residence permit or EU long-term resident status.
  • For work: Cabinet Regulation No. 157 of 8 March 2022 sets the level for each group of professions.

How the test works

The test checks listening, reading, writing and speaking. See the official website (linked below) for registration, dates and the fee.

How a private tutor helps

  • Trains speaking, which many people find the hardest part.
  • Works with tasks in the test's format.
  • Can explain grammar in English or Russian while your Latvian is still weak.
