Preparing for the centralised exams
Centralised exams close primary and secondary school in Latvia, and secondary school results are used for university admission. Here is what students take and how a private tutor can help.
What students take in grade 12
To get the secondary school certificate in 2027, students need at least 20% in the centralised exams in Latvian, maths and one science subject. The science exam is taken at the optimal level, or natural sciences at the general level.
Higher-level exams are optional in the 2026/2027 school year: students choose them when their university and study programme ask for them.
What students take in grade 9
At the end of primary school, students take centralised exams in Latvian and maths, and from the 2026/2027 school year also in science. Monitoring tests in a foreign language and spoken Latvian take place in April.
When the exams happen
In 2027, secondary school exams run from 10 May to 11 June, and grade 9 exams from 20 May to 2 June. The Cabinet of Ministers approves the schedule every year.
How a private tutor helps
- Finds and fills gaps in topics that weren't understood in class.
- Practises past exam papers under real time limits.
- Works through harder problems when a university asks for the higher level.
- Trains the speaking and writing parts of language exams.
The best time to start is autumn or winter, not the last month before the exam.
